Hotel Legislation

Gaming in New South Wales

Poker machines were introduced into hotels from April 1, 1997. Up to 30 machines are permitted on hotel premises. There are two types of poker machine licences:

  1. Poker Machine Entitlements (PME)
  2. Poker Machine Permits (PMP)

Both licences are transferable, however, PMEs are subject to forfeiture in most cases.

The permits were auctioned by the State Government, with 2,300 permits being sold to hoteliers in May 1998. The permits were issued to successful bidders in October 1998 at a cost of $50,000/permit.

Legislation affecting poker machines is covered in the following Acts:

  • Gaming Machines Amendment Act 2008
  • Gaming Machines Temporary Freeze Bill 2008
  • Gaming Machines Amendment Regulations 2005
  • Gaming Machines Further Amendment Act 2002
  • Gaming Machines Act 2001 (GMA-2001)

This legislation provides a Code, which regulates gaming in clubs and hotels.
