The private child care centre industry has experienced significant growth since the early 1990s when the Federal Government enabled private centres to be eligible for government subsidies. This saw the market expand significantly with a number of new operators entering areas and establishing purpose-built facilities.
In 2000, the Federal Government increased the subsidy level to private centres on an overall basis by combining Child Care Assistance and the Child Care Rebate to a single payment known as “Child Care Benefit” (CCB). The CCB arrangement further expanded the industry and has seen the introduction of new players in the form of specialist management companies and investor groups.
